| Geoje, the second largest island in Korea, is neighboring with Busan to the east with Gadeok island in between, Tongyeong with Geoje Grand Bridge to the west. Its northwestern coast faces Jinhae, Masan, and Goseong in Jinhaeman (bay). As of now, the city takes up 3.8% of the total land surface area of the South Gyeongnam province with an area of 401.45§´. It is promoted to the city status in December, 2005, and has 199,483 populations with 67,299 households as of December, 2005. It is divided into 1 town, 9 subcounties, and 6 dongs. |

Due to the influence of coastal climate, Geoje has a temperate climate, with an annual average temperature of 14.1¢ªC. The average temperature is 2.2¢ªC in January and 25.8¢ªC in August, showing 23.6¢ªC of difference in temperature. The annual average precipitation is 1797.1mm, most of precipitation concentrated in summer owing to the effect of the north pacific high atmospheric pressure.
Although situated at the southernmost island, Geoje boast of convenient transportation networks with National Road No. 14, High speed ferry service to Busan and Masan. In the near future, the completion of bridge construction between Geoje and Busan and the extension of Tongyeong-Daejeon Expressway to Geoje make itself more accessible from every direction.
Geoje is the Mecca of the Korea¡¯s shipbuilding industry, where many ship-related companies including globally recognized enterprises like Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. are actively operating and contributing to the Geoje¡¯s economic development. As of Dec., 2005, the number of companies registered in Geoje was 11,405 with 81,729 employees. In 2006 alone, Geoje¡¯s trade volume reached US$11.83 Million, with US$9.15 Billion, in export and US$2.68 Million, in imports.
Thanks to the warm temperature in winter, Geoje grows subtropical plants such as pineapples and aloes. In particular Jangmok and Yeoncho-myeon has Bamboo Complex and southern coastal area cultivates citron trees.
Geoje is at the center of Hallyeo Maritime National Park and is renowned for camellia seeds, pine trees and peculiar rock formations. Composed of as many as sixty islands, it features clear waters and soft sandy beaches covered with small rounded stones called mongdol. Geoje is also abundant with natural beauties such as Haegeumgang River and the eight-colored bellflower. There are three National Industrial Complexes; Okpo Vomplex housing Daewoo Shipbuilding, Jukdo Complex housing Samsung Shipbuilding and Jisepo Complex with Oil Preservation Base.
The Geoje coast, with its Hakdong Pebble Beach and Gujora Beach, is visited by 2.5 million visitors annually.
Refusing to rest on its current laurel, Geoje government is working hard to attain healthy society, happy people, and hopeful Geoje to take hold of the status of world class marine tourism city. |
